Here are 5 tips for the best wedding getting ready photos. The morning of your wedding, and getting ready, can be some of the most meaningful images of the day, but a few small details can make or break them. Small decisions and prep during the “getting ready” portion of the day can dramatically affect your photos. Here’s what I always tell my couples:
Natural light is always better than overhead lighting. I always recommend getting ready in a room with windows, and if possible, turning off artificial ceiling lights. Harsh yellow/orange light mixes with natural light makes for less flattering images.
Pro tip: If you’re choosing a getting ready space, look for one with big windows and light-colored walls. They bounce light and make everything glow.
A clear and clean space always makes your getting ready photos more elegant and calming. Half filled champagne glasses, shopping bags, remotes to the TV, luggage…it’s a given these will be in the room. But, they sneak into the background of your photos unless we clear a corner or window area. I always tidy up a space in the room before we start shooting, but it helps if there is already a cleared area for putting on your dress or other getting ready moments.
Tip: Designate one person in the room to be on “clutter patrol” for a certain area, it makes a big difference!
It all depends on how many people will be in the room with you during this time. If you’re planning on getting ready with 10 people in a tiny hotel room for example, your photos may feel cramped and chaotic. If you’re going to have a larger wedding party, consider renting a wedding suite or Airbnb with enough space to move around, breathe, and soak in the moment
Why it matters: More room = more beautiful angles, better group shots, and way less stress.
I suggest this especially if your room is on the smaller end. I always suggest keeping the room quiet for key moments, like getting into your dress or reading a letter. Too many people = distractions and lost intimacy.
Example: If your mom, family member, or best friend is helping you into your dress, have everyone else step out. These moments are emotional and deserve some space.
Rings, invites, vow books, perfume, shoes, florals, and more. If you want these styled flat lay shots of your wedding day details, it takes time and prep work to get these images JUST right. To help, set aside a bag or box of the wedding day items you would like to have photographed. That way, you are not scrambling to find certain items, and can actually enjoy some quiet time getting your hair and make up done while I capture your beautiful details.
Pro tip: Ask your florist for extra blooms, I’ll use them to elevate the whole scene.
